Thanks for your marvelous posting! I certainly enjoyed reading it, you may be a great author.I will remember to bookmark your blog and will eventually come back in the foreseeable future. I want to encourage you to ultimately continue your great work, have a nice day!

  11. D says:

Well makes sense since 50 shades is originally a twilight fan fiction. Lmao.

    • That explains so much about it. It really gets me that such poor examples of writing are not only being published but are making it to huge popularity. Is this what story telling in our country has fallen to?

  12. Jeyna Grace says:

Well, its a good platform for writers to practice their skills.

For me, my fanfics dont run out of the characters’ characteristics. I only write fan fictions that fits into a series, mainly to add more information about the characters of which the author did not go in to.

You can check it out at my blog and let me know what you think. Most ppl say my fan fictions fits very well into the worlds the author has already created.

    • See, part of my issue here is that what fanfic I’ve read has an entirely different feel to it. Yes, stories have feels to me. And the different feel to a fanfic stroy is just not something I care for.

The only exception to this rule of mine (because rules are made to be broken sometimes, right?) was when Anne McCaffrey let her son Todd co-write and then take over the Pern series. Yes, they still felt different, but still enough the same that it wasn’t a totally alien feeling like the fanfic I’ve read.

I think another part if my disenchantment with fanfic is that I see it as a waste of time. What little I’ve read, and I’m more than willing to admit, it has been very little, has left me disappointed. But even in the writing of it, why would I waste my time creating a story about someone else’s people, someone else’s friend’s, the voices in someone else’s head, when I can build my own friends and listen to my own voices?

      • Jeyna Grace says:

Like i said earlier, fan fiction is a form of practice where you get to explore your own style. You see, no one would dare publish their originals online to get criticism, the fact that ppl are plagiarizing everything now a days makes you fearful that your work might be stolen. Hence, if you wanna improve your own flare, write ff and let ppl criticize your works. That is what I am doing with mine. Furthermore, it helps you improve your imagination.

Personally, i dont read fanfics, i just dont like them because like you said, its weird, especially when draco is in love with harry. I am more of the fanfic writer who uses fanfics as a platform for me to practice my skills. In that course, I gain a number of subscribers that may or may not purchase my original works when I publish them later on.

  13. Shaineinok says:

LOL I just commented on another blog that I don’t get Fanfic….

  14. Amy says:

Thank you for saying this…I felt exactly the same way! For me it is akin to the Emperor’s new clothes…everyone is going on about what a fabulous outfit it is..and I’m like “but he’s not wearing anything at all.” People are saying I am crazy but I just can’t get through it. Sex for sex’s sake is not what makes good reading.

  15. Eva Rieder says:

Keep up the good work, Melissa! I look forward to reading more of your blog and hearing more about your work on here! -Eva

  16. charla hinkle says:

Swag pack only already have the ebook. 🙂 Charlahinkle@hotmail.com

  17. shaineinok says:

No clue. I haven’t any experiance with it. Do you have to have Prime? if so then it doesn’t affect me in any way since we don’t use that program.

    • Yes, you have to have Prime in order to use the KLL. It wouldn’t affect the book’s availability to Kindle users who don’t have Prime, however it would affect those who use Barnes and Noble, iBooks and Smashwords.

  18. charla hinkle says:

I have issues with the “exclusive” clause. Because of that clause I have had to purchase a kindle as well as the nook because I couldn’t get the books I wanted to read through anywhere but amazon. That said I think free market is the way to do it. The question I guess is will you get more sales being amazon exclusive than you would through smashwords, barnes and noble, sony, and the I store markets? In the end it depends on sales.

    • That’s where I’m stuck.

One of the benefits of KLL is that you can set your book to free for up to 5 of that 90 days. That 5 days of free gets authors a lot of exposure.

I have to try to figure out if the extra exposure is worth as much or more than the number of readers it may alienate with the narrowed availability.

  19. Lisat says:

I opted for the KLL but I’m not sure it’s even getting lended. I haven’t a clue how to track it. My thoughts were that the KLL would give my book better exposure. Because it’s my first book and my name means nothing in the writing world, then maybe people will be more likely to try it for free and hopefully like it and pass it on to friends etc. Now I’m wondering if it hinders sales?

    • Log into KDP, click on Reports at the top of the page, then click on the Month to Date Sales. There is a column in there that tells you how many loans and another for how many free downloads you have this month, there is also a link right above the report to download last month’s information.

Let me know what you think.

      • Lisat says:

Thanks Melissa! I just checked and I’ve sold some. Only 1 was borrowed. I was going to go on smash words as well, but I guess I have to wait the 90 days to be up. For me, the lending library is probably a good idea for exposure. But for you, maybe you don’t need that and it’s better to be on more download sites? Good luck.

      • It’s not the lending that I think will be good exposure, it’s the 5 days of free. From what I understand, the ability to offer your book for free to anyone, even for a limited time, is really excellent exposure.

  20. I’ve heard there’s gonna be a movie too. I’m wondering how they’ll manage it without the movie being rated X? Also who will they get to act in it? Didn’t they get all the actors capable of doing shallow, one dimensional characters to play in Twilight?

  21. Kornelia says:

My wife and i have been contented Michael meaagnd to carry out his researching by way of the precious recommendations he gained from your own web site. It is now and again perplexing just to happen to be releasing steps which usually some others could have been making money from. We really grasp we’ve got the website owner to give thanks to because of that. The type of illustrations you made, the straightforward blog navigation, the friendships you will assist to foster it’s all exceptional, and it is letting our son and our family recognize that the subject matter is cool, which is wonderfully essential. Thank you for the whole thing!

  22. Dear Melissa
As a NaNoWriMo widow last November I have no sympathy. You all asked to go on this camp and promised that you would enjoy it. You must have known about the word counts and plot developments and that there would be big kids who would brag about their NaNo achievements and show off their certificates from past years.
At least it’s raining today, so you are not tempted to sneak off and have fun swimming and climbing trees. I’m sure once the month is over your parents will rescue you and you will be allowed to play outdoors once again.
    Keep up the writing
    The Snail of Happiness

    • I’m sure my husband would agree with you, no sympathy. My letter was all tongue in cheek, I’m really having fun with Camp Nano. Making great progress… and one of my parents has no clue I’m even doing it. (The other, well he tries to be supportive, no matter what I do.)

I wish it were raining today, we’re stuck with yet another day of triple digit heat. I need a trip somewhere cool!

      • My partner really enjoyed last November… and in fact it has resulted in him producing his first published volume… he’s busy with the next one now although isn’t registered for the camp!
Perhaps I should set up a support group for the other halves of NaNoWriMers!

      • Actually, Change is the result of NaNoWriMo 2010. It took a lot of adding, rewriting and editing to get it to where it is now, but I’m happy with it and I’ll have it out in paperback soon. I think it’s fitting that I’m using Camp to work on book 3 (BTW, they’re doing camp again in August if your other half is interested!)
I think a support group for NaNo widows would be great!

    nice clean blog site Melissa!

  26. June Franke says:

I hope your other half is doing better!

    • Thank you, he is doing much better. He’ll still be off work for several weeks yet but his recovery seems to be going well. Now if I could just get him to stay locked in the bedroom, so I can get something done.

  27. Erin says:

I just got Fight. So excited have been waiting since June. I was curious to see however that Amazon has had it available since the 14th.

    • Because I’m self-pubbed, I have to submit it a few days early in order to be sure it will be up by my scheduled ‘release day’. For those who find it early, it’s a special treat!

  28. Heather says:

Nice 🙂 I had a similar reaction, if you’re interested in reading about it, you can check it out here http://wp.me/p20SuK-1a. I work for a self-publishing company called Kbuuk, you can visit our home page at http://kbuuk.com

Personally, I feel like one of the problems with 50 Shades is that its an easy read, and it’s entertaining for most readers because it’s so taboo, so it excites them and they want to talk about it, proving again that word of mouth is still the most effective marketing tool available. Then it just becomes a curiosity and people have to read it just to know what all the fuss is about. That’s why I read it. I stopped at book 1 though. I’m one of those have to read it cover to cover, even if it feels like torture and someone is sporking my eyes out kind of gals.

  29. Heather says:

Argghhh! I hate typos, I missed an apostrophe. My bad, c’est la vie.

  30. Erin says:

I don’t have Facebook can I enter the drawing here?

  31. charla hinkle says:

I have read both her books. 🙂 just commenting to let you know I was here

  32. Erin says:

Don’t know if I gave you the correct email or not so here it is again.

  33. Arlette says:

They really did a good job translating the book into a movie in my opinion. Obviously you always have to leave some things out, but they really captured the feeling of the book

  34. 🙂 Maria, good example for when technology hinders instead of helping. With my editor we used the same word file (with local backups) with track change active so that the date and time of change was also visible to any and all suggestions and modification color coded differently for hers and my changes. And still, the editing process took a full two months.

All the best and best wishes for your title which looks very promising indeed.

  35. Thank you for stopping by! I love getting comments! 😀
We use the track changes thing too, the problem this time was several files with the same name. Such a silly thing to cause so much trouble! 🙂

I love her, she is my ALL-TIME fav.!
The Rock Chicks are also awesome, along with the The Unfinished Hero Series and all three happen in the same city so some characters overlap.

The Unfinished Hero Series is a lil darker then the others, I.e bondage, and a more erotica feel

  88. stacyauk says:

I’m writing a crime thriller called Sorrow Dreams. It’s my first book. I get lost in it when I’m writing as well, and I have to write things down straight away or I forget them. I’ve lost so many ideas by not writing them down in time. I see the story being played out like a film in my head, like I’m witnessing something in the same room and if I like where it’s going I write it down. None of my writing is done in order, I know where the story is going but it jumps around all over the place.

  89. Thanks for having me today!

  91. lil says:

Read Change (Kitsune) today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading your next one and watching your writing style develop.
Obviously your an Anne McCaffrey fan as well, her writing style was amazing…I have almost all of her books and reread them frequently. Its really sad thats she’s no longer with us, her son Todd is taking on some of her ‘worlds’ but his writing is more technically inclined. I am hoping that you will be a prolific writer and help fill some of the void left by Anne’s passing.
All the best for you future.

    • Thanks so much! This is the sweetest and most touching thing anyone has ever said to me!
There are more to come in the Kitsune series, and I’m not yet sure how long the series will be.
Also, the White Mountain Chanat series are Kitsune shifters as well, but cougars instead of wolves and in a different location, the second book in that series should be out this winter.

For the most part in my writing, it’s the characters that move the story forward, but what’s playing out around them is also a big deal (just not as much). I don’t think I’ve ever written out a plot driven story, mainly because mysteries confuse me, hahaha.

  161. My story is a bit of both. I have strong, diverse characters but my of is interesting too! At least I like to think so lol

Jennifer Sivec thinks you’re awesome! 🙂 and good luck with Nano. I keep seeing tons of authors talking about it, and if I had time, I’d try my hand at it, but with school and work, I get about an hour a day to myself, which I usually fill up with doing extra school work to try and be ahead of the game. So, yeah, good luck.

Hello Melissa, Imgine my surprise when I started reading your novel Robin’s Nest, and read towns I live in and around. I grew up South of Safford on a ranch and my husband a few more miles south. We lived a few years in Morenci while he worked at the mine. He just retired 2 years ago and buying his family’s ranch South of Safford. My brother lived in Duncan 5 years while teaching school. All of us attended EAC. I want to thank you for writing Robin’s Nest. I enjoyed it very much. You never mentioned the name of your favorite Mexican restaurant, mine are El Charro and Casa. Thanks again, Jane John a fan

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it. You might also like my Kitsune series, as it takes place in Safford. My WMC series takes place in the Springerville area, if you are familiar with that.
I grew up in Duncan, but have been gone for the last 20 years. I would like to get closer as I still have a lot of family in the area.
