Victoria snarled, displaying her teeth, and her eyes glowed, providing illumination within the dark sewer. Her angry growl ended the conversation. She charged forward, claws ready, intending to eviscerate the undead creature.

“Whoa!” Logan whirled and his long arms flashed out. He caught Victoria about the waist and swung her around.

The dead thing emitted a scream of terror and retreated further down the tunnel. Rumbling with a continuous growl, Victoria struggled to be free from Logan’s hold.

“Take it easy there, Lassie. Good girl.”

“Let go! It’s getting away!” Her claws slashed at empty air, seeking to rend and tear the dead thing limb from limb. Logan’s superior strength held her back.

“Vic, that’s Evan you’re trying to kill.” Logan dropped his voice to a hiss. “Remember Evan? Evan, I need his help to get the police file on my mom’s murder. Evan, we’re meeting him here. Does any of this ring a bell?”

“Hi, my name is Evan. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” The thing held up a timid hand in greeting. Its voice registered in the falsetto range, giving it a breathy, child-like sound.

“You’re protecting that thing?” Victoria punched Logan on the chest with her clenched claw and then hit him again, directing her frustration against him until he released her. He let go, but he kept his body between her and Evan.

“Evan’s a ghoul, not a thing. Granted, he’s among the living-impaired, but he keeps to himself. He doesn’t hurt anyone. Snacks on the occasional stale corpse, but hell, everyone likes junk food every now and then, right?”

Victoria huffed and hit Logan’s chest again with both fists. “That’s disgusting.”

“I’m sorry you don’t like my choice of food, but it’s really my business,” Evan said.

Victoria turned her entire attention to Logan, trying to comprehend his reasoning. Maybe he didn’t understand.

She tried to explain. “Logan, it’s undead, an abomination. That rotting corpse has a soul trapped within. It must be destroyed so the spirit can move on.”

“Excuse me, but I’m not rotting,” Evan said in weak protest. It sniffed. “Maybe a bit rancid.”

She started forward and Logan shoved her back with a frustrated snarl. “What part of no is unclear to you? The n or the o?”

Her hands created a wringing motion; she envisioned his throat between them. “How can you protect it?”

Logan leaned forward so she could see the glow of his eyes, and the gleaming threat of bared teeth. “I am not going to let you hurt him, Vic.”

“Stop calling me Vic!” She wanted to scream with frustration. Why did Logan always have to be so damned contrary? It made no sense to her.

An expulsion of air escaped his lungs. “Look, my dad sanctions Evan within his territory. This ghoul is under his protection, so you shouldn’t destroy him without checking first.”

“Your dad doesn’t even know we’re here! Don’t play games with me!” She considered the ghoul, huddled about fifty feet down the tunnel behind Logan.

Finally, she grunted. “Why don’t you or Arik kill it?”

Logan issued an exasperated sigh. “You shouldn’t kill something just because you don’t understand it.”

Victoria regarded him with patent disbelief. “Are you even a wolf?”

Logan gestured with open arms. “Oh, come on! This is California. We’re tolerant of differences, remember?”

“I’m from Arizona.”

“All is made clear.”

Victoria huffed, but acceded and put up her hands to show she would not attack. “Fine, let’s get this over with.”
