What makes it Magical
Posted: April 21, 2013 Filed under: writing, | Tags: magical, making it magical, Melissa Stevens, sucked in, writing 1 CommentYou know how it feels when you find a really good book, you know what I mean, when you don’t feel like you’re reading the story or watching a movie of the story, but the ones where you feel like you are a part of the story? That’s what it feels like when I’m sucked into a story I’m writing. The rest of the world fades and the people around me often have to say my name several times before it registers that they’re talking to me.
I’m starting to get this way on my current story. I know my characters well enough that they’ll either talk to me or better yet, through me. Sometimes, I find myself mentally arguing with them about what I want to happen and what they tell me is happening. Once in a while I even find things on the screen that I didn’t consciously think. Those are often some of the best passages, at least in my opinion. Either way, I love it when it happens, it’s part of what makes writing magical for me. Do you write? What makes it magical for you?
A really good day.
Posted: January 6, 2013 Filed under: Odds and Ends, writing, | Tags: driving, kids, new project, ramblings, road trip, writing Leave a commentYesterday I spent most of the afternoon on a road trip, I ended up with more than five hours behind the wheel, with two kids in the car, both absorbed in the games they were playing on their individual devices. The radio was on, my favorite station, XM’s Octane, but I drove across a lot of empty desert, there wasn’t much to see. This lead, as it always does, to my mind wandering, I think over plot lines, I consider characters and their stories, I review things I’ve already written and come up with some new material.
It was after 9pm when I got home last night, but I had several things I had to get down, directions that current stories will need to go, details that my characters had let slip during that long drive. So, once I got the kids in bed, I took my laptop and set up camp in the recliner, turning on an old movie to keep me company. Once I got my side notes down I started on the new project that had haunted me for the last two hours of my trip. I couldn’t wait to get started, I had to get at least some of it down.
So I opened a new Scrivener file and got to work. My movie ended and I started another, not really registering the passage of time. The story was unfolding at my fingertips and that was what mattered, the people talking in my head, not the ones on the screen or the hands of a clock moving on their own. I was startled when the low battery alert popped up in front of me. I had been working for almost six hours (yes, my laptop battery lasts that long.)
I saved my work (not for the first time) and stretched and went to plug in the computer. I had gotten a lot done. I was happy, though, more than a little sleepy.
This morning I sat back down to it, the same project flowing as easily as it had last night. I’ve been up and down today, dealing with kids, feeding them, caring for them, getting them ready to go back to school in the morning. Even with all the distractions during the day I’ve managed to make thirty-six pages in the last twenty four hours. It’s been a really good day. I’m happy with it.
Now I’m going to go unwind a little in front of the TV, maybe knit a little, I would really like to finish my hood, though I know that won’t happen tonight.
I hope you had as good of day as I did.
Deep sigh of relief.
Posted: January 3, 2013 Filed under: Escape, Hunt | Tags: beta readers, Escape, Hunt, project, sequel, series, writing Leave a commentI just sent Hunt out to my beta readers. Honestly? It feels great. I need to set a release date and work on the cover, as well as a couple other smaller details, but Hunt is mostly done. I need to decide which of my other ongoing projects to focus on next.
I’m seriously considering going back to my NaNo book, which is a longer sequel to Escape, not in the way that Fight and Hunt are sequels to Change, but still a series. The new book focuses on Steve’s story. Considering his position in the Chanat, we get to see quite a bit of Nick and Rebecca, to follow their continuing story, but they aren’t the main focus. I’m enjoying learning more about Steve and I hope you will too.
NaNo ‘12, day 7
Posted: November 8, 2012 Filed under: NaNoWriMo | Tags: Day 7, Nanowrimo, progress, word count, writing Leave a commentYesterday was very busy, and at the end, very stressful, and I only managed about 300 words. This is why on days that things go well, I push to get more words than I really need, to make up for days like yesterday. Even though I had a day with very little progress, I’m still not behind. I know I can do this, even if I have more hard days.
We are starting the second week, which, traditionally, is one of the most difficult. We tend to lose momentum, to get bogged down in life and get behind. I have to keep in mind that I need to push through it and keep going, once we get through week two it gets easier. I promise.
NaNo ‘12, Day 4
Posted: November 4, 2012 Filed under: NaNoWriMo | Tags: Day 4, good day, Nanowrimo, progress, writing Leave a commentI had a difficult day yesterday, I didn’t make the 1667 daily average, however, I did make enough to keep from falling behind.
Today has been much better, I’ve managed just over two thousand words, and I’m working on rebuilding my buffer. I’m hoping for another good day tomorrow.
NaNo ‘12 Day 1
Posted: November 1, 2012 Filed under: NaNoWriMo | Tags: Day 1, Nanowrimo, progress, writing Leave a commentAt the end of day one, (well, not the end of the day, but the end of the writing day) I’m sitting at just over 2500 words. It’s a good place. A little over the average needed of 1667 a day, and if I can maintain 2500 words a day for a few days, I’ll have a good buffer, in case I miss a day when life just gets too crazy.
I’m happy with it.
Back to work.
Posted: July 22, 2012 Filed under: Hunt | Tags: distractions, family, writing Leave a commentAfter nearly two weeks of nursing my other half, he’s back to the point of nearly being able to care for himself. He can get up, move around, do what needs to be done, though he milks it for all the attention he can get. It’s time for me to get back to work. Back to working on the next installment in Nickie’s story.
Getting back to work is easier said than done. My house still has 4 other people in it all the time. School doesn’t start for another nine days for one kid, and sixteen days for the other two. The other half will play invalid for another month. All this adds up and the distractions can be difficult to ignore. Thankfully, I have headphones and can turn my music up loud to ignore them all. While the kids are still home they can run errands for their father. I’ll deal with having to do them myself when they’re back in school. In the mean time, I’ll get as much done as I can.
One day to go.
Posted: July 18, 2012 Filed under: Fight | Tags: edits, Fight, release, writing 2 CommentsI’ve worked hard over the last few weeks to get to tomorrow. And now that it’s so close, I just want to be able to focus on something else. FIGHT will be released tomorrow. And while I hope you wall will like it, there’s nothing I can do to about that now.
FIGHT is done. I’ve released it out into the world for others to enjoy and I’ve moved on. I know, it sounds callous, but if I don’t move on, how will anyone find out what happens next? I’m already hip deep in the next book in the series. I’ve been working on getting Nickie to tell me what happened next. We were going great until the copy edits came back for FIGHT. Now I have to get back in the mindset and actually hear her talking to me again.
In the mean time, I’ve been playing with another concept. We’ll see if it goes anywhere before I tell you too much about it, but I will tell you that so far, I think it’s a pretty good one.
Camp Nano, Day 20
Posted: June 20, 2012 Filed under: Hunt | Tags: camp, family, Nanowrimo, writing Leave a commentI got a very late start tonight, and I had some difficulty in the beginning, but things are moving better now. I’ve managed to make the month to date goal but I’m pretty sure the day is going to roll over before I hit any other goals. That’s okay. I’m still happy with where I stand. Plus.. Sometimes seeing old friends and family is worth the delay.
Camp Nano, Day 19
Posted: June 19, 2012 Filed under: Hunt | Tags: camp, Nanowrimo, progress, writing 1 CommentToday was a great day. I knew where I was going this morning when I sat down and I managed 1500 words before I had to leave for an appointment. This evening I came back and managed another thousand words. I’m not just on schedule I’m a little bit ahead. I’m hoping it continues. Days like this are so much easier than the ones where you struggle for every word.
