Excerpt:

The table was cluttered with papers and maps, and their search for Pierce was underway. Information was slowly trickling in. They had men following up on leads, searching known vacations spots for Pierce and his gang. Most of the leads turned out to be dead ends, but still they followed up with everything, as the one lead they didn’t pursue would be the key to finding the rogue shifters.

The anxiety of the situation ate away at Raja’s gut, while Ty’s shown on his face. They seemed no closer to finding Pierce, yet they could feel his men were in the mountains watching them. His assassin teams were stalking the area, waiting for them. With the danger surrounding rarely did anyone leave the compound, especially not the women and children.

“Raja, stop pacing. You’re going to wear a hole in my favorite rug,” Tabitha teased, watching him over her coffee mug as he paced the study.

He smiled, unable to help it. Tabitha always had a way of lightening the mood. When I find my mate I hope she is able to make me smile the way Tabitha can. This woman has been through so much, yet she still is more concerned about the people around her than herself.

“You know I’m good for another one.” He couldn’t sit still. The hairs on the back of his neck stood at attention with the knowledge that something wasn’t right. He could feel in his soul that something was going to happen. Pierce would make a move before long, but what would that move be?

“I received word before coming over that Leo and Connor arrived in California and were on their way to locate Pierce’s sister. It’s extremely unlikely that he’s there, but maybe she’ll be able to tell us something.” He ran his hand over the windowsill. Outside looked like a winter wonderland. Everything was covered in a thick, white snow, with even more snow forecast for the next few days.

“Keep me apprised on the situation. I want them back within seventy-two hours, or we send in another team. We don’t have the time to waste on this,” Ty said, looking up from his e-tablet, where he was reading the reports from the teams trying to track Pierce and his clan. Teams were all over the country, yet no one had seen hide or hair of Pierce and his men. It wasn’t surprising that Pierce knew they were searching for him, but they didn’t expect Pierce to run and hide. Maybe the fact that his days were numbered, for the murder and attacks on other tiger shifters, had him scared.

Raja nodded, still gazing out the window.

“I need to go speak with some of the guards. Raja, could you look after Tabby until I get back? I don’t want to leave her alone in case there’s another attack.”

“Sure.”

“Thank you.” Ty rose, kissing her on the cheek as he did. “I shouldn’t be long, love.”

Once they were alone Raja heard Tabitha’s chair push back from the table, her sock-covered feet padding toward him.

“Raja, are you okay?” She laid her hand on his back as if she could give him the comfort she was able to give Ty. Unfortunately, it only worked on a mate, but the caring gesture touched him.

“I’m fine. You have enough to worry about; there is no need to be concerned about me. I’m fine.” Even he could hear the uncertainty in his voice—there was no doubt she could.

“I don’t believe you. If you ever need to talk, I’m here. It will go no further than us.”

“Mates don’t keep things from each other.” The reservation was thick in his voice.

“To help a friend in need I would do what needs to be done. Raja, I haven’t known you very long, but I consider you a part of my family and can see your pain.” She ran her hand over his back.

“Thank you, but everything is fine with me. It’s you I’m worried about. I can feel something bad is coming.” He wasn’t being entirely honest. There was something bothering him, but he couldn’t put his finger on it, let alone put it into words to tell his Queen.

“We’ll get through it. We know Pierce is still out there and after me. He has a larger following then we guessed. I know it’s your job as our Lieutenant to worry, but we’ll get through this.”

The invisible ear bud allowing him contact with command central and the ground teams sprang to life. “Breach. We have a breach at the main gate. All available units respond.”

“Shit. Where’s Felix?”

“Ty gave him the morning off since we were meeting with you and wouldn’t be leaving our quarters.” Tabitha joined him at the window. “Go. I’ll be fine.”

“Like hell I will. You have to be protected.” She had her own transmitter, allowing her to know what was happening, and he could feel her fear spilling off her.

“Raja, stay where you are. Felix is on his way. I’m proceeding toward the main gate,” Ty’s voice came through the transmitter.

“Be safe,” Tabitha whispered.

“Tabitha, come away from the window. Everyone always forgets about the windows. You feel safe and secure inside the houses, while the sharpshooter is just waiting. Waiting for you to walk past the window.”

He could feel her reluctance but his job was to keep her safe, not allow her to stand in front of the window for a glimpse of what might be happening. Unlike the other guards, his vow wasn’t made because she was their Female Alpha or because she was the Queen of the Tigers. No, his vow was made for Ty. Ty had saved his ass more than once, and the best way to show his appreciation for it was to keep Ty’s mate safe.

A fallen angel with a mission and a medical examiner who’s lost her faith are fighting for their souls in a glittering, near-future Manhattan…

Blind faith is for fools. That’s what Dr. Morgan Sterling believes. And she’s going to prove it by curing the zombie plague ravaging her city’s slums. She’s certain it’s not a sign of the End of Days, but a nasty disease—until an angel appears in her morgue in a flash of glory.

Luniel is not just a fallen angel. He’s a powerful warrior sworn to fight evil in hopes of a chance at redemption. He’s after the demon princes who are stealing the seven vials of holy wrath which, when perverted, will unleash eternal hell on earth.

To stop the plague, Luniel needs Morgan’s help, and her faith. But Morgan believes science is their salvation. If the zombie plague is a demonic curse—and if Luniel is true—he’ll have to prove it. Even if he loses his heart to true love or his soul to Hell…

Excerpt:

Today, of all days. It was Thursday. The world couldn’t end on a Thursday.

Luniel, the fallen angel, crouched on the shore of Liberty Island in a hot August sunset with blood lapping at his feet. It licked the rocks beneath his boots, clotting. All the way across the bay, to the firelit Brooklyn shore and the gleaming blue arcs of the Narrows Bridge, what used to be water gleamed sick and scarlet.

The angel sniffed the air, and tasted copper. A dead fish bobbed belly-up, pale white flesh and fins. He poked the warm liquid with his finger, and licked. Yeah. Definitely blood. And human. There were seaweeds and algae that sported the same fleshy color. But Luniel had tasted enough blood in his three thousand years to know this wasn’t algae.

He straightened. No breeze flicked his long black hair back. In his human guise, he had no wings. He scanned the distant shore with sharp blue eyes, further than any human could see, and his nose twitched. Hunting. For something. Anything. A trick. A college prank. A fish slaughterhouse. Overflow from some industrial accident, one of the factories along the built-up Jersey waterfront spilling toxic chemicals.

Not a sign of the Apocalypse. Not God’s wrath.

Across the bloody bay, Babylon’s glittering towers razored the red sky, the decadent sprawl of skyscrapers and spires they once called Manhattan. The sunset flashed on steel and mirrored windows, glaring in competition with neon lights and rainbow columns of virtual advertising. Even from here, Lune’s preternatural ears detected buzzing electrics, the faint digital beep of comms towers, snatches of conversations, and in his magical angelsight, the city glowed, green with the living, pulsing energy of human souls.

Helicopters lasered their searchlights through smoke and heat haze, sweeping over burned-out housing projects and shining condominiums. Traffic noise hummed, the groaning subway, horns and engines and wailing sirens, police and fire and the ever-more-urgent ambulances. At the height of summer, plague had stolen into the Empire State like a homicidal houseguest, more frightening than California dengue and deadlier than arctic flu, and people were afraid.

But terror happened in Babylon, the world’s richest, rottenest city of sin. You only had to look at the shining glass spire piercing the sky, one hundred and ten stories high, built back in wiser days where a pair of ill-fated twin towers once stood. The world had turned ever more rapidly to shit since then, but Luniel still remembered that day well. That day, angels dived for earth, fiery wings flashing, but it was too late. Even the fallen, like Lune, were powerless. The people screamed and died and thought the world was ending.

Horrific? Yeah. But the monkeys had no idea what they were in for.

What the end of the world would really be like.

Luniel shivered. This wasn’t over yet. It couldn’t be.

He dug into his jeans pocket for his phone, and speed-dialed. Trendy SIM implants in your ears were all very well for humans, but fast-healing angelflesh rejected biotech. The irony was pleasing and bitter. “Come on, Ithiel,” he muttered. “Answer your rotted phone.”

Ithiel was still on heaven’s A-list, but he and Lune stayed in contact. If anything was going down, Ith would know. But voicemail kicked in, his brother’s laid-back laughter: I’m busy. Leave a message. If I give a shit, I’ll call back.

Luniel swore—even after centuries, defiance felt good—and waited for the beep. “Party never stops upstairs, huh. Call me, asshole,” he said, and ended the call.

A week. Ithiel hadn’t answered for a week. And now this.

It could be stupid luck. Coincidence. Random events colliding like flotsam.

But after two millennia spent dealing out heaven’s wrath, and going on another one walking the earth and seeing it all from the other side, Luniel was wearily certain that what goes around, comes around to kick you in the balls.

Coincidence was bullshit. Nothing was random. Everything happened for a reason, and fate was one dastardly, despicable motherfucker you just couldn’t avoid.

But inexorably—inexplicably—the blood lapping at his feet made him angry.

Defiantly, recklessly, sinfully angry.

Excerpt:

Snow slipped and slid through the deepening drifts trying to catch the disappearing black wolf. For a moment he paused, a ghost wolf silhouetted on a rise. Her heart pounded. Was he waiting for her?

She forced her frozen feet to speed up, tucking her chin and racing toward the hill, but her slick soles betrayed her and she tumbled into a drift. When she looked up, he was gone.

“Wait!” she shouted. The gathering storm swallowed her words whole.

She lay on the ground while the wind drove tiny stinging flakes into her eyes and skin.

She deserved to die here in the snow. By stupidly following what she’d thought was a sign from her dead father she was lost, worse than before. At least earlier, she’d been on a trail. Now she was deep in the wilderness of the Grand Tetons, caught in a blizzard with the early night of winter on its way, her feet and hands slowly growing numb. The wolf hadn’t been her savior, sent from a dead caring father. Instead, he’d betrayed her.

Another howl carried over the rush of the blizzard.

The wolf was still out there.

She staggered to her feet, searching fruitlessly though the curtain of snow for a black shadow. Another howl had her head whipping to the side. Through the gloom of the gathering clouds and snow, instead of the wolf, she saw a light flickering in the trees.

She plowed into the underbrush, pushing through branches that seemed to claw and bite. Following the howls to the flickering light she spotted a tiny cabin, small glowing windows beckoning. She made it to the door and pounded with her last bit of strength.

No one came. Snow sagged against the hard wood. This was as far as she could go.

The door opened with sudden force, and she fell in, landing hard in a man’s open arms. Snow blinked up at the stern dark face of every LA’s director’s twenty-something dream pirate.

Golden eyes, black tousled hair and a build that every actor would kill for.

“Won’t you come in?” he asked, his voice deep and rough and surprised.

Every light in the small living room and open entryway was on, and more lights were on upstairs. She said the first words that tumbled out of her mouth, “Your lights are on, don’t you know we’re trying to save energy?”

An almost rusty sound rumbled deep in his chest, vibrating her body and surprising a smile out of her.

His teeth flashed. “I’m sorry. I’ll turn them off right away.”

He set her on her feet. “Would you like to come in and get warm?”

She took a good look at him, white button down shirt flared wide and unbuttoned showcasing a broad muscled chest.

Touchable black hair curled damply at his neck. His deep gold eyes gleamed secrets, and she suddenly realized she must have caught him naked in the shower.

Her cold cheeks burned.

He looked like a god and she became suddenly aware of her cold sodden clothes, her lank hair dripping snow onto his floor.

“I’m sorry, I’m making a mess. I must look awful.”

“Don’t be sorry.” He stared at her, his enigmatic eyes capturing hers, suspending time as he reached out a hand and stroked a clump of snow off of her hair “You’re gorgeous,” he almost whispered.

His hand trailed down her hair to flick snow on the stone pavers at her feet. Liquid heat pooled low in her pelvis.

“I…” she stuttered.

The wolf had done the same thing, stared at her with golden eyes, trapping her in its spell. She shook herself free and stepped back, unsettled and shaky with a strange desire.

Excerpt:

Hamza walks into the room with his guard looking at Nikole’s still body lying on the table. “Is she dead?” he questions.

“No sir, she passed out while we were in the middle of the procedure. We were doing like you instructed and burning her body with the needles when she went unconscious. We thought it best to come get you right away.”

Hamza looks over her body, placing his fingers to her neck and feeling only a small hint of life. His lips curve up in excitement as he anticipates what is yet to come. “Good, leave us alone.” He starts to walk around the table staring at her naked and bloodied body.

The room emptied out while Hamza continued to circle the table. He tried to decide what to do with this dead weight prisoner. Leaning over her body, he backhanded her jaw, the cracking of her bones deafening in the silence of the room. He heard her moan in agony while she slowly came to consciousness.

“Nikole, I think it would be best if you just gave me what I asked of you. As soon as you tell me what we want to know this pain will all stop.” Taking his knife from the sheath on his belt, he placed the cold blade to her cheek. “I will cut your pretty little face apart. Don’t think I won’t.” Taking the tip of the blade he breaks the skin at the top of her left cheek and slowly cut lines into her face. Droplets of blood ran down her cheek staining her flesh as he slashed her face. Nikole’s voice is gone from all the screaming she has done and all she can do is heave a cry. Her eyes are still forced open, not even tears can form since she can’t blink. “Come on little Princess, just tell me where Zayn is so I can kill him. I promise this will all stop.”

What I’m Reading ~ Edge of Courage ~ Elaine Levine

This is the first book in the Red Team series.

After more than seven years on an undercover assignment in Afghanistan, Rocco is out of the military now, but he’s haunted by things he can barely remember. He doesn’t sleep because the nightmares will come, but they don’t always stay away when he’s awake either. When his friend and buddy, Kit, asks him to back to their hometown, Wolf Creek Bend, Colorado, to check into some trouble his sister is having, he doesn’t want to go, but he owes his buddy.

Mandy wasn’t thrilled that her brother sent someone to check up on her, but she soon realized that he needed to be there as much as she needed the help. She knows that with patience and persistence, she can help him to deal with the past that haunts him, but will he let her? When her brother’s troubles make her a part of them, she’s more thankful to have him there to help her, but is that all there is to it?

What did I think? I loved it. It showed more of the darker side of what some of our returning soldiers are dealing with and what it takes to help them back. At the same time there was an intriguing mystery and a good romance. I can’t wait to pick up the next one in the series.

SugarGirl

Excerpt:

Reaching out, he grasped the chair and swiveled it until she faced him. Candy tilted her head back, way back, her hungry gaze drinking him in. Unruly black hair had been tamed to silky waves above big blue eyes she’d gladly drown in. His face was rough-hewn with sharp angles, and a rugged beard shadow softened the intensity of his square jaw. He’d grown into that coltish boy’s body and then some. Broad chest, powerful arms roped with corded muscles, lean hips….

Calloused fingers grazed her cheek, drawing her focus back to his smiling eyes.

“Of all the gin joints….” he prompted, beginning a familiar greeting they’d shared a million times over while growing up.

She grinned up at him. “In all the towns, in all the world….”

“She walks into mine.” He finished the famous movie line, cupping her cheek, his thumb repeatedly gliding along her bottom lip. “I can’t believe it’s you. What are you doing here?”

“At the hotel? Guest speaker at a conference. In San Antonio? I moved back to be closer to my mom. Dad—”

Her voice choked up, unable to say the words. It had only been three months since her father’s fatal heart attack. The wounds were still raw.

Strong arms wrapped around her, pulling her in to that incredible body, one hand holding her head cushioned against a delicious chest she wanted to lick, the other rubbing soothing circles over her back. He smelled good—sandalwood and leather.

“I heard about your dad.” His voice rumbled through his chest and into her, Candy eagerly soaked in the delicious vibration. “I’m so sorry.”

In his arms, she felt safe and loved, never wanting to leave. All too soon, he broke the embrace and stepped back. “Come on, grab your drink. Let’s find a table and catch up.”

With a nod, she turned back to the bar, got another glass and a bottle of the chocolate wine nestled in an ice bucket from the crestfallen Luke. She gathered her belongings and followed Jeremiah to a small table at the back of the bar.

Once they’d settled into seats, she turned his question back on him. “So what are you doing here?”

“Had a bad injury last year and can’t compete on the circuit anymore. Got tired of constantly being on the road with the band.” He shrugged. “So here I am, spinning my wheels while I wait to close on a ranch in the Hill Country.”

She’d known about the injury. It had been all over the news. That damn ornery bull’s horn had come disturbingly close to gelding Jeremiah. But the band? She hadn’t heard about him leaving Branded.

“A ranch? Wow! I thought you never wanted to be tied to one place?”

“I grew up. Had to happen sooner or later.” Shifting his chair closer, he reached out and placed his hand over hers on the table that suddenly seemed a lot smaller. He made a blatant point of checking her out, head to toe, a lascivious smile curving his lips. “You’ve certainly grown up.”
