Slayer’s Kiss , The Shadow Slayers, Book 1

Kara Reed is a supernatural failure. But where her magic falls short, her fists get the job done. The criminal element doesn’t stand a chance once she hits San Diego’s dark streets.

When two smoking-hot tenants move in next door, she thinks her love life might finally be heating up. Just being near Gavin and Julian is enough to make her want to offer her body on a platter.

Gavin and Julian know it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out. They’re fallen angels sent to watch over the king’s daughter, one of the last females of her kind. Trouble is, she doesn’t seem to think she needs watching—unless they’re watching her shimmy out of her clothes.

No matter how tempting her guardians, Kara’s not about to let anything stop her from tracking down a sadistic killer who carves into his victims and leaves them for dead. Even when she realizes her target may be the very scourge of heaven from which her angels swore to protect her…

Product Warnings:

Contains a kick-ass heroine with a foul mouth, a kind heart and a raging libido, and two fallen angel warriors who wouldn’t have her any other way. Watch out for sex in the clouds, a magical island of hedonism and a love triangle that gives new meaning to the term “hot-wings”.

Book Description:

Her lover is back from the dead…but now there’s hell to pay.

When Kara Reed learns her bondmate, Julian, is truly dead, and that Gavin has seemingly skipped town, she figures things have hit rock bottom. But soon, a string of bizarre accidents has her doubting those closest to her. And to make matters worse, the demon-king’s brand carved into her best friend Abbey’s stomach is deteriorating by the day.

Then a powerful coven of witches issues Kara an ultimatum. Bring them the blood of a true fallen angel—the only thing that will heal Abbey—or die. Kara would do anything to help her friend. Problem is, the only fallen angel she’s seen lately is the disoriented black-wing who attacked her scouts. One who looks suspiciously like Julian. Getting his blood might be easier if he was more interested in kissing her than killing her.

Caught between a coven of vengeful witches and a murderous dead lover, Kara must deliver the blood, heal the slow poison of Abbey’s brand, and save Julian from being consumed by the Abyss. But to do this, she may need the help of the one man she swore never to trust again…Gavin.

Product Warnings:

This book contains an angry demon returning from the dead, a clan lord hiding a terrible secret, and a hunted heroine cracking open a can of whoop-ass. Watch out for creepy kitties, exploding bad guys, and some very sudsy shower sex.

Dark Flight

The Shadow Slayers, Book 3

Cassi Carver

Amazon BN Samhain

Book Description:

In a world of shadows, a pure heart can be the most dangerous weapon of all.

Kara has been training for months to help take down Brakken—the merciless black-wing who is making life hell for the Demiáre. But when Julian discovers a scout has been tracking Kara, he wants her out of the fight—even if it means breaking her heart in the process.

Gavin isn’t much better. He’s already lost so much to Brakken and has no intention of allowing the woman he loves to be the next sacrifice. He and Julian have their hands full trying to fight Brakken’s army and keep Kara safe, especially after her recent visit to the mythical white-wings. Since her return, she’s been acting decidedly…strange.

With a terrible battle looming, Kara doesn’t have time to think about her conflicted feelings for Gavin and Julian—or the fact that she’s developed an unnatural taste for Gavin’s blood. But if she thought it was complicated evading mysterious scouts and fending off vicious black-wings, she’s learning that’s nothing compared to loving two strong-willed men.

Product Warnings:

This book contains angels that aren’t what they seem, a heroine with mad midwifery skills, and a metamorphosis that will change life as we knew it.

Althea Grant is doing fine. Sure, her Charleston gallery is suffering from the bad economy, and her artistic aspirations have gone nowhere. But she’s happy enough. When rugged metal sculptor Steel rides up on his motorcycle looking to rent studio space, his infusion of cash is more than welcome. But his art is raw, visceral, sexual—and completely inappropriate for her pastel world of watercolor landscapes.

Steel, fascinated by Althea’s rare albino coloring, sees in her the key to his next piece: a metal satyr that can be used for bondage games. Moving into her gallery basement is the first step; seducing the coolly polite lady into modeling for him is the second.

As Steel peels away her careful manners and tasteful outfits, Althea begins to realize her life isn’t just fine at all—it’s as pale and washed-out as the watercolor paintings she’s failing to sell. Can she transform her life and accept her most secret desires?

Excerpt

Kirliss captured her other wrist and held them close in front of her, his warm fingers massaging her skin, while he studied her face. The boat surged over a wave, disturbing her balance. Kirliss’s unusual eyes caught the light, boring into her.

“This is silly,” she tried.

“Do you want me to make you stay?”

“What?” Taylor choked. She couldn’t let him treat her this way. “No! You’ll do no such—”

She lost her breath entirely when he pressed up against her. Thinking he was trying to embrace her, she pulled away and found herself backed against the brass railing.

By the time she gathered her flustered thoughts, her wrists were handcuffed to the rail behind her. Mortified, a bit afraid and—worse—suddenly and wildly aroused…

Excerpt:

“Prologue

I STARED at his arm so tightly coiled around me, running my eyes down his bulging veins and the thick patch of hair covering dark skin. I liked bears as much as any other type, but Adam wasn’t doing it for me. His dick bulged in his pants beautifully and I found no reason at all not to give it a shot—again. Precisely because I had known even before undressing it wouldn’t work out, though he felt good enough buried inside me. He was trying hard. They always did. The less I responded, the harder they tried. Pounding someone into the middle of next week wasn’t as fun if the receptacle of your pleasure didn’t show much of their own.

The feeling of him invading me wasn’t turning me on, not really. In a half-hard, sort of complacent lump, my dick dangled between my legs and my stomach, not quite there and not quite absentee—the irony of it wasn’t lost on me. My knees were buried deep in the mattress and my forehead dug into the pillow. I saw his legs framing mine. I felt his pulse quicken. It wasn’t going to take him long. My gaze darted for the window, a colorful motel sign with flickering lights outside drawing my attention. The sky was a wild navy, close to black, as the colorful lights blinked on and off. Black, deep black eyes flashed through my mind and my insides clenched painfully, my heart lurching in my chest. Adam grunted, the squeeze finally toppling him over. Boredom with my life threatened to manifest through a gut-deep sigh. It itched to erupt. I squished it back down at the last moment. He was a good guy and I liked hanging out with him. I even enjoyed letting him fuck me, since he seemed so happy to be able to. I wasn’t cruel enough to mention my limp dick, but it flapped all shriveled and numb between us, an unflinching obstacle in our way. He probably thought I had some medical issue; his eyes were kind and brimming with feeling as he held me afterward. I enjoyed that too, being held. I liked the taste of his mouth when he kissed me, the smell of his skin as I nibbled on his neck. I enjoyed his voice as he talked me to sleep, the sound of him laughing when I said one half-assed thing or another.

In the morning I’d wake to an empty room, a note on the nightstand saying something had come up. It was too hard for him to face my lack of response—in the heat of night it could be lost between dark shadows. It would be easier to pretend. The glory of morning was merciless, though. Could he do anything better? Was there something in particular that did it for me? No. Didn’t I find him attractive? Of course I did. It just wasn’t there… the infamous it always missing. It bothered him that he couldn’t be it for me, and I hated myself for my impotence to enjoy him. He really was a good guy. We were going to break up in a week or so at most. I was really good at telling when that moment came. It hung between us like a colorful sign we both pretended wasn’t there. And just before breaking up, he’d try harder than ever, just to be sure we’d given this thing all we could, because he really liked me. So I knew it was time, that time again.

I woke up to the empty motel room—no surprise there. The note rested neatly on the nightstand, elegant writing explaining one emergency or the other. I didn’t bother to read it, but he had beautiful longhand. I took the time to admire that. I’d keep it as a memento, probably. I liked mementoes of all my failed attempts at it. They grounded me. Slumped on the bed, the sticky sensation in my body finally pushed out that soul-deep sigh. A shower, a bit of a shave, and a bite of last night’s pizza later, the usual image of Rizzo Berg greeted me in the mirror. I smiled ruefully, slicking back my hair. In the morning it was easy to fight away the memory of deep black eyes. But at night there was nowhere to hide, so I’d find someone new to try and dissolve my memories into.

As soon as darkness would fall, another unsuspecting victim would be human padding for my shield against the deep black.”

Her Loving Husband’s Return

Book Three

The Loving Husband Trilogy

Meredith Allard

“I need to get home,” James said aloud.

He heard shuffling behind the wooden plank that separated his quarters from the rest of the barrack. “We all need to bloody well go home,” he heard.

What would you do to return to the only one you have ever loved?

James Wentworth’s secret is no longer a secret, and now he and his beloved wife, Sarah, have been separated. While suffering his own internment, James is reminded of his time with Japanese-Americans in the Manzanar Relocation Camp during World War II, and he cannot allow the past to repeat itself. With the help of his friends—Chandresh, Jocelyn, Timothy, even the irreverent Geoffrey—James learns what it means to return, and he is determined to return to his Sarah no matter the challenges—or the consequences. Will James and Sarah be reunited once and for all despite the madness surrounding them? Will James’s most fervent wish be granted? The changes in store for the Wentworths may be irreversible.

Excerpt:

Prologue

In seventy years so little has changed. Then, the gate was taller than the tallest person, electrified, eager to shock to the death. Looming above the fence were eight high-standing towers with armed guards with submachine guns who looked down upon the people as though they could be, should be shot for amusement’s sake. They were at one with the enemy across the Pacific Ocean, many decided. They had to be. They were traitors. They were spies. How else can we separate the good ones from the bad ones? How else can we know the loyal ones from the conspirators? We must round them up like cattle and pen them here where they’re safe from us and us from them.

Looming above the barracks, higher than the gates, beyond the guard towers, were the mountains. Always the mountains. They encompassed everything within their distance—one vast, jagged, granite wall stretching toward the heavens from the deepest valley in the Americas, cascading Vs flecked with icy snow, unmistakable even through the wintry clouds. The mountains were everything everywhere. If the gates, the guard towers, and the armed military police weren’t enough to remind you that you were a prisoner here, the mountains shouted your helplessness. You are here, the mountains said, and we will trap you here forever.

I remember when the bus stopped near the guard station, a lonely shack at the edge of the camp, one window on either side, misshapen rocks slapped together with mortar, a pagoda-style roof. The guards spoke to the bus driver and barked directions as though the people inside were orange-clad prisoners linked by irons, but they were only families—fathers, mothers, children, grandparents. I remember the anxiety in those inside the gate, their quick-scanning eyes wide as they drew as close to the barbed-wire fence as they dared, searching those on the other side for missing family or friends. I remember the fear in those outside as they stepped off the bus and shivered in the bitter desert cold. Their clenched hands grabbed hold of family members and they stared without seeing the nighttime landscape of brush and tumbleweed that promised blinding dust storms, the horizon flat until the mountains. Always the mountains. The bewildered people outside clutched their bundles of luggage, all that was left of their former lives. The people from the buses were herded inside, shouted at, tagged and numbered. Already they were losing themselves. When the gate slammed and locked behind them they looked toward the outside as though they would never be free again.

So, yes, I have been here before. I have walked this arid wilderness. I have heard the sand blow a maddened howl in the night. I have seen the white-glow moonlight reflect the saw-toothed horizon. Through it all, the mountains have remained the same. After all, what is seventy years to a mountain range that has watched millennia pass away? Now, the gates are taller since they guess we can jump anything less. Now, the gates have silver coating, the barbs deemed no longer necessary since they guess the barbs cannot pierce our preternatural skin. Now, the military police carry guns with silver bullets, which we secretly laugh at. Now, I am the one who has been carted away, considered too unpredictable to be out among polite society. Yet the barracks, the mess halls, the natural barrier of the mountains between us and everyone else in the world…so much of it is the same. There are nights when I cannot make the distinction between then, when I was here from compassion, and now, when I am the one encaged. But do not worry for me, my love. Now, with this silver-coated gate and these imposing mountains between us, I am reminded all too strongly how I cannot be without you. Soon, Sarah. I will hold you in my arms soon. Be patient this little longer, my love, and I will return to you. I will.

The Loving Husband Trilogy

By Meredith Allard

James Wentworth has a secret. He lives quietly in Salem, Massachusetts, making few ties with anyone. One night his private world is turned upside down when he meets Sarah Alexander, a dead ringer for his wife, Elizabeth. Though it has been years since Elizabeth’s death, James cannot move on.

Sarah also has a secret. She is haunted by nightmares about the Salem Witch Trials, and every night she is awakened by visions of hangings, being arrested, and dying in jail. Despite the obstacles of their secrets, James and Sarah fall in love. As James comes to terms with his feelings for Sarah, he must dodge accusations from a reporter desperate to prove that James is not who, or what, he seems to be. Soon James and Sarah piece their stories together and discover a mystery that may bind them in ways they never imagined. A fallen angel with a mission and a medical examiner who’s lost her faith are fighting for their souls in a glittering, near-future Manhattan…

Blind faith is for fools. That’s what Dr. Morgan Sterling believes. And she’s going to prove it by curing the zombie plague ravaging her city’s slums. She’s certain it’s not a sign of the End of Days, but a nasty disease—until an angel appears in her morgue in a flash of glory.

Luniel is not just a fallen angel. He’s a powerful warrior sworn to fight evil in hopes of a chance at redemption. He’s after the demon princes who are stealing the seven vials of holy wrath which, when perverted, will unleash eternal hell on earth.

To stop the plague, Luniel needs Morgan’s help, and her faith. But Morgan believes science is their salvation. If the zombie plague is a demonic curse—and if Luniel is true—he’ll have to prove it. Even if he loses his heart to true love or his soul to Hell…

Excerpt:

Today, of all days. It was Thursday. The world couldn’t end on a Thursday.

Luniel, the fallen angel, crouched on the shore of Liberty Island in a hot August sunset with blood lapping at his feet. It licked the rocks beneath his boots, clotting. All the way across the bay, to the firelit Brooklyn shore and the gleaming blue arcs of the Narrows Bridge, what used to be water gleamed sick and scarlet.

The angel sniffed the air, and tasted copper. A dead fish bobbed belly-up, pale white flesh and fins. He poked the warm liquid with his finger, and licked. Yeah. Definitely blood. And human. There were seaweeds and algae that sported the same fleshy color. But Luniel had tasted enough blood in his three thousand years to know this wasn’t algae.

He straightened. No breeze flicked his long black hair back. In his human guise, he had no wings. He scanned the distant shore with sharp blue eyes, further than any human could see, and his nose twitched. Hunting. For something. Anything. A trick. A college prank. A fish slaughterhouse. Overflow from some industrial accident, one of the factories along the built-up Jersey waterfront spilling toxic chemicals.

Not a sign of the Apocalypse. Not God’s wrath.

Across the bloody bay, Babylon’s glittering towers razored the red sky, the decadent sprawl of skyscrapers and spires they once called Manhattan. The sunset flashed on steel and mirrored windows, glaring in competition with neon lights and rainbow columns of virtual advertising. Even from here, Lune’s preternatural ears detected buzzing electrics, the faint digital beep of comms towers, snatches of conversations, and in his magical angelsight, the city glowed, green with the living, pulsing energy of human souls.

Helicopters lasered their searchlights through smoke and heat haze, sweeping over burned-out housing projects and shining condominiums. Traffic noise hummed, the groaning subway, horns and engines and wailing sirens, police and fire and the ever-more-urgent ambulances. At the height of summer, plague had stolen into the Empire State like a homicidal houseguest, more frightening than California dengue and deadlier than arctic flu, and people were afraid.

But terror happened in Babylon, the world’s richest, rottenest city of sin. You only had to look at the shining glass spire piercing the sky, one hundred and ten stories high, built back in wiser days where a pair of ill-fated twin towers once stood. The world had turned ever more rapidly to shit since then, but Luniel still remembered that day well. That day, angels dived for earth, fiery wings flashing, but it was too late. Even the fallen, like Lune, were powerless. The people screamed and died and thought the world was ending.

Horrific? Yeah. But the monkeys had no idea what they were in for.

What the end of the world would really be like.

Luniel shivered. This wasn’t over yet. It couldn’t be.

He dug into his jeans pocket for his phone, and speed-dialed. Trendy SIM implants in your ears were all very well for humans, but fast-healing angelflesh rejected biotech. The irony was pleasing and bitter. “Come on, Ithiel,” he muttered. “Answer your rotted phone.”

Ithiel was still on heaven’s A-list, but he and Lune stayed in contact. If anything was going down, Ith would know. But voicemail kicked in, his brother’s laid-back laughter: I’m busy. Leave a message. If I give a shit, I’ll call back.

Luniel swore—even after centuries, defiance felt good—and waited for the beep. “Party never stops upstairs, huh. Call me, asshole,” he said, and ended the call.

A week. Ithiel hadn’t answered for a week. And now this.

It could be stupid luck. Coincidence. Random events colliding like flotsam.

But after two millennia spent dealing out heaven’s wrath, and going on another one walking the earth and seeing it all from the other side, Luniel was wearily certain that what goes around, comes around to kick you in the balls.

Coincidence was bullshit. Nothing was random. Everything happened for a reason, and fate was one dastardly, despicable motherfucker you just couldn’t avoid.

But inexorably—inexplicably—the blood lapping at his feet made him angry.

Defiantly, recklessly, sinfully angry.

Excerpt:

Snow slipped and slid through the deepening drifts trying to catch the disappearing black wolf. For a moment he paused, a ghost wolf silhouetted on a rise. Her heart pounded. Was he waiting for her?

She forced her frozen feet to speed up, tucking her chin and racing toward the hill, but her slick soles betrayed her and she tumbled into a drift. When she looked up, he was gone.

“Wait!” she shouted. The gathering storm swallowed her words whole.

She lay on the ground while the wind drove tiny stinging flakes into her eyes and skin.

She deserved to die here in the snow. By stupidly following what she’d thought was a sign from her dead father she was lost, worse than before. At least earlier, she’d been on a trail. Now she was deep in the wilderness of the Grand Tetons, caught in a blizzard with the early night of winter on its way, her feet and hands slowly growing numb. The wolf hadn’t been her savior, sent from a dead caring father. Instead, he’d betrayed her.

Another howl carried over the rush of the blizzard.

The wolf was still out there.

She staggered to her feet, searching fruitlessly though the curtain of snow for a black shadow. Another howl had her head whipping to the side. Through the gloom of the gathering clouds and snow, instead of the wolf, she saw a light flickering in the trees.

She plowed into the underbrush, pushing through branches that seemed to claw and bite. Following the howls to the flickering light she spotted a tiny cabin, small glowing windows beckoning. She made it to the door and pounded with her last bit of strength.

No one came. Snow sagged against the hard wood. This was as far as she could go.

The door opened with sudden force, and she fell in, landing hard in a man’s open arms. Snow blinked up at the stern dark face of every LA’s director’s twenty-something dream pirate.

Golden eyes, black tousled hair and a build that every actor would kill for.

“Won’t you come in?” he asked, his voice deep and rough and surprised.

Every light in the small living room and open entryway was on, and more lights were on upstairs. She said the first words that tumbled out of her mouth, “Your lights are on, don’t you know we’re trying to save energy?”

An almost rusty sound rumbled deep in his chest, vibrating her body and surprising a smile out of her.

His teeth flashed. “I’m sorry. I’ll turn them off right away.”

He set her on her feet. “Would you like to come in and get warm?”

She took a good look at him, white button down shirt flared wide and unbuttoned showcasing a broad muscled chest.

Touchable black hair curled damply at his neck. His deep gold eyes gleamed secrets, and she suddenly realized she must have caught him naked in the shower.

Her cold cheeks burned.

He looked like a god and she became suddenly aware of her cold sodden clothes, her lank hair dripping snow onto his floor.

“I’m sorry, I’m making a mess. I must look awful.”

“Don’t be sorry.” He stared at her, his enigmatic eyes capturing hers, suspending time as he reached out a hand and stroked a clump of snow off of her hair “You’re gorgeous,” he almost whispered.

His hand trailed down her hair to flick snow on the stone pavers at her feet. Liquid heat pooled low in her pelvis.

“I…” she stuttered.

The wolf had done the same thing, stared at her with golden eyes, trapping her in its spell. She shook herself free and stepped back, unsettled and shaky with a strange desire.

Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of her mind for years. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch, I play rock music and manage one of Houston’s premier R&B/Variety/Pop bands.

This series will include some of my actual experience in the paranormal with fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing “metaphysician”, but most of the material is fantasy.

PROLOGUE

The stars twinkled above them as they raced through the castle. They were not permitted to stay long, only until their task was complete.

On earth everything was tangible and unique, but back home the realm was an endless white void where everyone existed in unison. They both loved their home, but once the magnificence of this world had been experienced, it was hard to go back.

Over the years they’d been sent on many missions, and it saddened him as he knew this would be their last. Coming to earth was the only way he could spend time with her, because back in their world falling in love was forbidden.

The sound of her giggle as she ran ahead brought a smile to his face. It was like a beautiful melodic bell chiming inside his head. He followed close behind, taking note of the way her dark hair flicked out behind her and caressed the nape of her neck. He imprinted in his memory every line and every curve of her body; because after that night he wasn’t sure if he’d ever see her again. She turned to glance over her shoulder and he caught a glimpse of her radiant face, her sparkling blue sapphire eyes and perfect porcelain skin. She was beautiful, and heavenly, and he loved her.

Keeping his feelings from her was the hardest thing he’d ever had to do, but making the decision to leave was harder still. She couldn’t know his intentions as he knew she’d want to go with him. He wouldn’t allow it; he couldn’t let her make that sacrifice. They were best friends and he was closer to her than any angel he’d known. Where he was going there was no turning back and she didn’t deserve that life. It would be better to live without her than to stay and live with her just beyond reach. He couldn’t do it anymore. He couldn’t risk her existence to satisfy his own, and he couldn’t let himself love her.

She grabbed his hand and pulled him into a small stone alcove. Her touch was warm and spread happiness through him, consuming him like a burning fire. Touching her always made him feel like he was home.

“We have to go back now,” she whispered.

He knew it was true, but he didn’t want to leave. Not yet. This would be the last time he saw her this way, possibly the last time he would see her at all, and he wanted the moment to stretch on forever.

“Just a few more minutes,” he said. “I’m sure they won’t mind.”

“They see everything, we should be back already.”

She was right, she was always right. For a moment they stood gazing into each other’s eyes, and he wanted what he couldn’t have, wanted it so much it hurt. He almost told her there and then exactly how he felt, but instead he hardened his heart.

“Fly with me first?” he asked.

She hesitated, then smiled and nodded.

He slid his hands around her waist and she rested her head on his chest. He closed his eyes and sent his orbs of light around them. The tiny glowing spheres swirled until they joined together as one and they left earth, bound for the outer realm. There they could fly freely, without the risk of being seen. He thought it was the most amazing feeling in the world.

They flew side by side, twisting and turning in unison, so in tune with each other no words were needed. He knew exactly what she would do before she did it. A gentle breeze made by the flutter of her wings caressed his arm and sent a shiver through him. She was magnificent, and even more so with wings spread wide. Beautiful and silvery white, she shimmered in the night sky and it took all his strength not to reach out and touch her. He longed to feel the silky smoothness of her feathers beneath his fingertips, to hold her, and it broke his heart knowing that when she arrived home he would not be with her.

They danced and twirled. Her giggle floated among the stars which twinkled brighter as she neared. He wished they could stay like that for eternity, happy and free, but he’d made his decision and the time had come to let her go.

He knew they should have been back already, so he reached for her and took her into his arms. For a moment he savoured her touch, drew in the fresh scent of her hair which smelt like summer rain, and made sure he’d remember the way her body seemed to fit perfectly with his.

Together for the last time, she lifted her head and he looked deep into her eyes. She pulled back and he could tell she was about to ask what was wrong, she always knew when something wasn’t quite right. Struggling to hold it in, struggling to hide his emotion, he lost the battle and a tear trickled down his cheek. She reached up and caught it in the palm of her hand where it sat glistening, then solidified into a diamond. Before she could speak, he said the words he’d been waiting a long time to say.

“I renounce you and all your ways.”

The expression she held was one that would haunt him for the rest of his life, and he hated that he made her look that way. She shook her head and tried to grab for him, but he was already slipping away. He had no way of telling what was in store for him, or what his fall would be like. Her angelic face was fading into the distance, she was becoming a blur at the end of a long black tunnel, and he could see her calling his name but he couldn’t hear her. Before long she was a distant memory, and he was surrounded by a cold, heavy blanket of darkness.

Sonata240x355

Excerpt:

The following excerpt takes place the first time that Sayuri goes to Michael’s apartment.

As they went down in the elevator and across to the park, Michael spoke to the dog, “So far so good. We’ve got her in my apartment. I expect your full cooperation tonight. Whatever happens you are not to climb on the bed, should I get so lucky, or slobber all over Sayuri. If there’s any slobbering to be done, I’ll do it. Got it, buddy?”

Buttercup wagged her tail furiously, nearly knocking over a passing pedestrian.

“Sorry, mam.”

Michael thought about how Sayuri had looked when she answered the door. So cool and composed. Delectable. Good enough to eat. Down boy, he reminded himself. Don’t blow it now. You’ve got her this far.

Taking a deep breath he muttered, “Keep it cool.” Then he looked at his dog. “Okay, Buttercup, do your thing so we can get back up there.”

****

She heard the key in the lock and a moment later man and dog were back in the room. Buttercup trotted over to Sayuri and leaned against her, looking up at her adoringly with one blue and one brown eye.

“That was quick,” Sayuri commented as she scratched the dog behind her ears.

“She was anxious to get back to you. We don’t often have visitors. Actually, I’m surprised at her reaction to you. She usually hides under the bed when there’s anyone she doesn’t know in the apartment.”

“Under the bed? I can’t believe she can get all that bulk under a bed. Just what kind of dog is she? I’ve never seen anything like her. She’s huge. And those eyes are amazing.”

Sayuri moved to the armchair and sat down. Buttercup followed her and put her massive head in Sayuri’s lap.

“Clearly she’s fallen in love with you. The vet thought she was probably half Malamute and half Newfoundland, but I’m pretty sure there’s some wolf in the mixture. And the two different color eyes are unusual, but they do happen, particularly in those breeds.”

“Did you say wolf?”

“Watch.” Michael came over to the dog, knelt down beside her and put his arm around her. He lifted his head back and started to howl. The dog threw her head straight back and joined him. The sound was at one and the same time musical and eerie.

“Wow.” Sayuri stared at the dog. “I haven’t heard anything like that since I was twelve years old and went on a canoeing trip up Desolation Sound with my father. We could hear the wolves from our campsite every night. I loved the sound.”

“Don’t let her howl give you any ideas about Buttercup’s personality. Her wolf genes begin and end with her howl. She’s a complete wimp.”

“She’s a big dog for an apartment dweller.”

“Yes, well, I didn’t exactly choose her. She just sort of happened.” Michael paused. You see, I’m in the R.A.A. Unit.”

“R.A.A.?”

“Robbery, Assault, Arson. We got an anonymous call that there was a break and enter in progress at an apartment house on the east side. When my partner and I answered the call, we didn’t find a robbery in progress. What we found was found a room full of people cutting and bagging cocaine. We called immediately for backup, but before it could come, gun fire was exchanged and people got hurt. It wasn’t supposed to have happened that way.”

Michael paused and frowned. Sayuri wondered if he was going to say anything more.

Then he sighed. “When it was all sorted out, as we were to leaving the scene I heard whimpering. I pulled this small scrawny shivering mass of matted fur out from under the bed. I was supposed to take her to the SPCA, but I didn’t. I took her home with me. She couldn’t have been more than two months old and she was half starved and filthy. I fed her and bathed her and the next day I took her to the vet for a checkup. He said there was nothing wrong with her that food and love wouldn’t cure.”

“So you had a dog.”

“I had a dog. I had no idea at the time she was going to grow into a giant hairy mammoth.” This was spoken with obvious affection as he ruffled the dog’s head.

“But her name?”

“Just look at her.”

Sayuri studied the dog. She had fur as thick as a bear’s, only longer. Her underbelly was white and everywhere else she was brown and black and white in large splotches. “I don’t get it.”

“Look under her chin.”

Sayuri laughed. “Of course.” There was a large spot of bright yellow there.

The dog, tired of being the object of so much attention, moved to the fireplace, circled three times and plopped down in front of it.

About the Author:

Blair-2012-256x230I started to write soon after I found my first pencil. But I began to write for publication about 30 years ago — professional books. I wrote six of them, all still in print and still in use. Only lately have I turned to fiction. I’d have done it a lot sooner if I’d had any idea how much fun it was!

I’ve lived in many different places. The US — Certain cities call to me. I love San Francisco and Seattle and the wonderful Oregon Coast. Australia — among the most open welcoming people in the world, and a wide open young country with incredible land and sea scapes, with amazing animal and bird life right out of science fiction. Canada — HOME. The place where I belong.

I travel a lot. I usually spend the month of October in Europe, Greece or Italy, and the winter in a little house I built many years ago on a small non-touristy Caribbean Island. I have worked and studied in many places — Hungary, Australia the US and Canada, and have spoken in most of the States and Provinces as well as Taiwan and various cities in Europe. I enjoy being surrounded by cultures other than my own. I enjoy my own as well — but variety is indeed the spice of my life.

I keep busy — and I love my life. I love meeting the people who come here to the west coast of Canada and stay in my B&B. I love traveling after the tourist season is over. And I love writing. My interests?? Music, especially opera, reading everything in print, and Writing. And walking on the beach and swimming. At one point I had hoped to swim in every major sea and ocean. I’ve realized that may not be possible in one lifetime — but trying has been fun!

Heels and heroes_LG

Excerpt:

“You think only some superheroes are real?” he asked, shock rushing through him.

“Justice,” she said, after glancing around to make sure they were alone. “There is a difference between real superheroes like you who have the power to save people from villains on a regular basis and people like me. My powers, such as they are, don’t make me any different from Maria and other normal people. Yours do.”

“You think it’s the powers that separate us?” Before he realized what he was doing, he was up from his chair and standing only inches from her. Her face was turned away, and she had to look at him so he could make her understand. He touched her soft skin with his fingertips, tipping her chin up. A scowl cut across her full mouth at his touch, but she didn’t move away.

“Isn’t it?” Her voice was soft, caressing.

It took a moment for him to remember what they were talking about.

“It’s not our powers that separate us—make us heroes. Yes, us,” he added as she started to shake her head. “It’s the willingness to put on the uniform. To face things that might be stronger than ourselves in order to save other people. And the lack of power you’re talking about?” Her skin brushed against his as he leaned in to whisper. “That lack of power is what makes you a real superhero, Brenda, because you’re willing to fight in spite of that fact.”

She turned her head, mouth parted to argue with him, to deny what he could so clearly see. Bringing his face down inches from hers, he grazed her jawline with his knuckles. She swayed toward him, gaze fixed on his mouth. She licked her lips, and the last bit of control he’d clung to broke.

Her lips were soft—so soft—and after a moment’s hesitation she kissed him back with a zeal he hadn’t expected. The sweet smell of strawberries filled his nose, and it occurred to him on some level that the intoxicating scent was probably her shampoo. He reached for her, touching her back with his hand, needing to get closer, to feel her body on his. She pressed against him eagerly, and her mouth opened. Soft and wet, her tongue caressed his.

Suddenly he couldn’t think about anything but her. The way she’d filled out her tight, little uniform. And the sexy confidence she donned with her conservative blouse and slacks. He hardened painfully in his uniform, and she moaned. The small sound made every muscle in his body tighten. He didn’t care that they were practically in public. He had to have her. Now.
