Christie recently weathered Hurricane Sandy and she’s here to tell us some of her experiences.
The Anatomy of an Author Without Power
So recently, I found myself in the middle of Hurricane Sandy. My characters, family and I live in NJ. We lost power for four days along with a tree, a portion of my fence and a trellis – nothing compared to what so many others had.
I found my characters knocking on my brain demanding that I write. But how could I? Obviously in this day and age I do all my writing on a computer. Now I did have my iPad but we were also without Internet, and I house all my writing online in Google Drive. I tried to tell them but they refused to listen. They stamped their feet and annoyed me until I had to find a way to get their story moving again. Now if I had a nice manual typewriter down the basement or in the attic, I would have gladly jumped on and typed the story out (I could later OCR the copy back into my computer). But alas, I was at a loss for that steam-punk-like machine as well. It seemed pen and paper was all I had to offer them, knowing I would have to type it all back in later. Something I was not looking forward to doing. But they were relentless and incessant in their demands.
And so I wrote with pen in hand, ink on paper, and I have to tell you, I’d forgotten how writing could make your hand and wrist sore, especially now that I was so out of practice. I complained to them but they only told me that good work, hard work, does not come without blood, sweat, tears and a sore hand. So I wrote more. And then I wrote some more, until a notebook had been half filled. This seemed to quiet my natives for a bit. Until … new characters started to knock on my brain.
They wanted their story told, the story of being stuck in a hurricane without power. I laughed at them and told them they were copycats, but they only laughed back at me; then proceeded to tell me how much free material I was getting. They told me research didn’t come cheap and sometimes a good author needed to experience the story before writing it. And I understood what they meant. My present situation was lending to an amazing storm scene as well as dealing with the aftermath. So again I told the new characters about my computer. I asked them if jotting down a few ideas would be enough for them. They giggled and said “No! You know you don’t write that way, so why are you even suggesting it? Now sit down, get your pen and write!” Sometimes characters can be a bit annoying like that.
So I listened, like the good little author I am, and began to write their story. Did I mention all of this happened while I was in the dark? That’s right. I wrote all this via candlelight, ink and paper. It brought me a sense of what it must have been like for many of the classic authors. I had a new appreciation for them. And my characters said, “Your welcome, Christie, because sometimes you have to go back to the basics. It will make you a better writer.”
And they were right. Without my computer, or even a light bulb, my creativity flowed without interruption. Well, my kids still called for my attention, but nothing else did. No Twitter. No Facebook. No email. No thesaurus or dictionary. And it showed in my writing. So I thanked my characters for forcing me to continue to work and making me realize that I had been missing out on some of the joy of writing because technology got in the way. I guess I should have known. I still enjoy holding a real book in my hand to read. It’s so much more intimate. Oh did I mention I read too? Simpler times. And so now one of my new storm provisions shall always include a pen, paper and candle. Hell, I might try writing that way just for fun!
Can a childhood pact affect the lives of three adults?
Love and betrayal surrounds the lives of lifelong friends Lanie Rhodes, Grant Bennett, and Dane Voight. Years ago, they made a pact to remain together as friends forever. The boys also made another secret pact that same day—to never vie for Lanie’s love.
Grant and Lanie have secretly been pining for one another since they were children.
Now grown up, they finally admit their feelings for each other and what ensues is a twisted tale of deception as Dane does everything he can to stop them.
The story weaves around this uneven love triangle. What will happen to the pact? Will friendships be destroyed? Will lovers emerge?
Excerpt:
“You go first,” I said.
“All right. I missed you so much these past six months,” he offered.
“I already know that; that doesn’t count.”
“But I don’t think you know the extent or how.”
“Okay . . . how then?”
“I don’t ever want you to be away again.”
“Grant, work will always cause one of us to travel for extended—” and he put a finger over my lips. I suddenly felt the urge to wrap my tongue around it.
“No, Lanie. I don’t ever want you to be away from me; never again. I missed you terribly.”
“Um, terribly?” God I was so lame. I stared into his eyes. The heat between us became intense. It was almost like electricity was crackling between us.
“Lanie, do I have to spell this out for you?”
“Yes, please. Spelling, definition, and then use it in a sentence.”
And then he just kissed me. It was a soft, gentle kiss that sent a shock wave from my lips right to my girliest of girl parts. When he pulled away, not very far away, he just stared into my eyes with something that was not looking at me like a sister. What was he searching for?
“Could you please spell that again?” I murmured. He relaxed and laughed softly and kissed me again, this time allowing his tongue to brush across my bottom lip. I was melting.
It took everything not to pounce on him and do all the naughty things that were suddenly running through my head right there on my porch.
“Use it in a sentence, please.” I whispered with my eyes still closed, my head still tilted.
“Of course.” And he crushed his lips to mine, pulling my body against his. I was lost in him. His tongue began swirling with mine and my head began swirling, too. We remained in this sentence, which was slowly approaching a paragraph. I didn’t care, I would have been happy kissing a novella with him.
When our lips finally parted, I wasn’t sure what to do next. “Would you like to come in?” I sounded like a complete idiot.
“Lanie, I’m not sure this is right or wrong. I just know it’s what I want. But I want to go very slowly. I don’t ever want to hurt you or ruin things between us. Maybe not tonight. Promise you understand.”
I raised my right hand and stated, “I promise I understand.”
And then his lips were on mine again. I reached up and curled my fingers into his hair and drank him in. I wanted to pull him inside to see where this would go, but I had promised. So I released him.

Hello readers! We’ve got something a little different for you today, we’re going to let YOU help choose the book’s cover! First, let me give you the blurb, then I’ll post the two covers and part of the first chapter. You can vote in the comments. Don’t forget to enter the drawing to win one of ten (yes 10!) copies of Ocean Kills.
Around the world, murderers and rapists pick off the innocent. Killing loved ones, separating families, and ruining lives.
As an eight-year-old girl, Ocean witnessed her family’s massacre and something altered inside her. Twisting her genetic code… unlocking an ability to teleport.
Ocean Breeze was never destined to be normal, especially being named after air-freshener. She’s a shadow, a ghost—a dark savior of the innocent. Armed with a switchblade in her bra, and a box-cutter in her pocket, she hunts the filth of the world.
Callan Bliss is a Sydney Police Officer whose skill set is far above a normal cop. All his fellow officers see is a hard-worker who loves to catch perpetrators and surf, but that’s because they don’t know his past. When Callan arrests a suspicious looking prostitute, coming face to face with a self-confessed vigilante, his secrets aren’t that easy to keep silent anymore.
Ocean hates the police with a passion, and has no intention of being held captive by a cop, even if he is sexy as hell. Teleporting from under his nose, Ocean hunts her next target—a man responsible for the largest sex ring in South Africa—and he’s about to die. But she doesn’t count on Callan giving chase, nor the body-quaking lust which consumes them. However, Ocean’s dark hobbies take precedence over what her heart wants—her thirst for murdering is killing her too, and not even Callan can save her.
Now, which do you prefer?

Chapter 1:
My name is Ocean Breeze. Yep. Ocean freakin’ Breeze. It was my mom’s attempt at some posh-sounding name. She was inspired by—get this—a bottle of toilet air-freshener. My heart squeezed at the thought of a cookie-scented woman with hugs that held sunshine.
The sound of my Nikes pummelling the pavement chased away my thoughts. The slapping of rubber against asphalt was similar to the slap the last prostitute-abusing john gave me. Stinking bastard. No one raises a hand to Ocean Breeze without losing an appendage. Or more, as the case may be.
I swiped my hands on my vinyl, red miniskirt. It wasn’t exactly an attractive outfit—Nikes with a miniskirt? But I’ve learned the hard way. Running in heels never worked. Ever. The sleazy men who paid for sex didn’t care what was on my feet, only what was between them.
I jumped and jived through the crowd. It was two in the morning, and the streets of Kings Cross, Sydney, were a hive of activity. Drunken students hauled themselves from karaoke clubs. Rich business men back-slapped each other for the lap dance from the uni-student, who pocketed their tips to pay for her law degree. This place was full of clichés and smut.
And I loved it.
I could disappear here. I was a nobody. Even boasting a pair of ruby lips and a figure that could’ve graced the center fold of Playboy, I didn’t stand out. Beauty was coveted in the Cross, and plastic surgery was the salvation if nature didn’t do the work.

Thanks so much to Stacey for being our guest today.

Stacey Rourke brings us the hilarious Gryphon Series. She lives in Michigan with her husband, two beautiful daughters, and two giant, drooly dogs. She holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and is currently hard at work on the continuations of her action-packed series, as well as other literary projects.
My interview with Stacey:
What’s your inspiration? My kids. For them I wanted to create a strong female character that shows them how to dig down deep in times of turmoil and doesn’t need someone to rescue her. I also wanted to set the example for them of finding your passion in life and following it.
Why do you write? I write because I have to. Because it’s who I am. Simple as that.
Would you write more than one series at a time? I can’t. I’ve tried. I just don’t have the attention span for that. I fear I’ll get hit by a bus in the middle and finish either. Seriously. Thoughts like that plague me.
What’s your writing process? Write when inspired? Make time? Daily word goal? Etc. For my first drafts I try to belly up to my computer five days a week and knock out at the very least 1000 words in a sitting. That doesn’t sound like much but with a four and five year old at home even that number can be tricky.
Do you write to music, other noise, or have to have silence? It really depends on my mood, concentration level and what I’m writing. Some scenes I HAVE to have music to help me set the mood, other times my groove thang gets going and takes away my concentration.
If you write to some set noisemaker, list a few, give us an idea of your preferences. Oh, the song selection is a little bit of everything! For Caleb’s scenes I listen to The Bollox, Flogging Molly, music along those lines. For scenes with Rowan I tend to listen to Jace Everett’s Bad Things. But really everything from Jimmy Buffett, to Black Betty has prompted moments of inspiration.
Of all your books, which is your favorite? Right now, probably Embrace.
Thanks so much for answering my questions, Stacey.
You can find Stacey online on Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter, Amazon and her website.
Stacey has graciously offered a copy of each of her books, THE CONDUIT, and EMBRACE for a giveaway! I’ll link to the giveaway at the bottom of the page, but first, more about EMBRACE.
Whether she likes it or not, eighteen year old Celeste Garrett has come to terms with being the Chosen One. She knew having a “normal life” would be tricky, between intense training sessions and epic demonic battles, but she didn’t know at what cost it would come. That is, until a dear friend is harmed by the malicious forces hunting her.
Now, she’d like nothing more than to retreat into a hermit lifestyle to prevent anyone else from getting hurt. But startling revelations, amazing new abilities, and mortifying moments in front of insanely hot guys won’t allow time for that. Soon, Celeste finds herself surrounded by darkness and wondering who she can trust—if anyone.
EMBRACE can be found on Amazon.

This weeks Feature Friday Guest is Christy Sloat.

Christy Sloat is a Southern California native who now lives in New Jersey with her husband and two daughters. She believes that reading is a passion and it should be embraced. If she is not reading or writing she is cooking or spending quality time with her children. She believes in past lives and love that can last lifetimes. She is huge Stephenie Meyer and J.K. Rowling fan. Some of her favorite vacation spots are Maine, Massachusetts and California.
Today we have a short interview and a giveaway!!
Hello everyone! My name is Christy Sloat. I am the author of The Many Lives of Avery Snow and the newly published, The Brown House. I am pleased to be featured on this blog. I hope you check out my books and if you read them leave a review. I am an avid reader myself. I enjoy Paranormal, Young Adult, Horror and Romance books. I support Indie Authors, because I know how hard it is to get yourself out there as an author. My books are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords and more.
Why do you write?
I write because I feel that it is a passion that I have always had. I loved to write as a child. I have a very vivid imagination.
Would you write more than one series at a time?
Yes actually I am doing that right now. I have my “Past Lives Series” and my “Visitor’s Series” out at the same time. I like being busy.
What’s your writing process? Write when inspired? Make time? Daily word goal? Etc.
I try to write when I can find time. Being a stay at home mom, it makes it very hard to write during the day. So my writing time is late at night. I am a night owl. You will find me up until at least 1:00 am writing. I love to turn on Pandora and listen to music while I work. It helps the creative process. I do not have a word goal. I write until I can do it anymore. Until my fingers are tired.
Do you write to music, other noise, or have to have silence?
I have been known to write to silence at times, but I prefer music. It helps get me in the mood for my characters. For example when I am writing from Avery Snow’s perspective my music is sad/mellow.
If you write to some set noisemaker, list a few, give us an idea of your preferences.
I prefer to listen to Pandora Radio. I like the Twilight Radio, Indie Rock and Christina Perri stations.
Of all your books, which is your favorite?
I think I am most proud of The Brown House. It’s not that I do not love Avery Snow, but there is just something about The Brown House characters that I adore. Of course I love both my books. But right now, The Brown House wins.
Are you a Mac or are you a PC?
PC. I have no clue how to use a Mac.
Where can you find Christy? Facebook, Goodreads, Amazon, Smashwords, website, blog.
Now for our giveaways. We’re going to give away an ecopy of The Many Lives of Avery Snow.

And one of The Brown House.

Available for Kindle, and Nook, and in paperback at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Posted: April 7, 2012 | Author: Melissa Stevens | Filed under: Visitors, What I'm Reading | Tags: blog tour, Chael's Luck, Giveaway, Mireille Chester, what I'm reading |
I’d like to welcome Mireille Chester here today as a part of her Blog Tour. We have a short interview and a review of her latest book Chael’s Luck
First, Mireille answers a few questions for us.
Melissa Stevens: What’s your writing process? write when inspired? make time? daily word goal? Etc.
Mireille Chester: For the most part, I just get the kids ready for school, make a pot of coffee and start to write. Because I am a stay at home mom, I’m fortunate enough that I can just write all day if I feel like it. I do tend to leave the housework a bit longer than I should, though, thankfully, my husband is very understanding and will often do laundry for me. 😀 I don’t have any goals for the day or week. I find that if I do that, I get a nasty case of writer’s block.
MS: Do you write to music, other noise, or have to have silence?
MC: I have to have noise. If my three year old isn’t at preschool, then Treehouse is usually on TV. If it’s just me in the house, I have music playing.
MS: If you write to some set noisemaker, list a few, give us an idea of your preferences.
MC: I tend to have set songs for certain stories I’m working on. I think it’s just the mood of the music that go with the mood of the story line, or sometimes there’s a specific song that reminds me of the characters. For Chael’s Luck, some of the songs that struck a chord with me were ‘Us Against the World’ by Westlife, ‘When I Look at You’ by Miley Cyrus, ‘When You’re Gone’ by Avril Lavigne, ‘Raise Your Glass’ by Pink, ‘Must be Doing Something Right’ by Billy Currington, as well as many more.
MS: Why do you self-publish?
MC: The reason I self-publish my ebooks (and I have to say it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done) is because the publishing company I signed on with only publishes hardcopies. Thankfully, I met some fantastic people online who helped me with the process and now I try to return the favour by helping newer authors who also wish to self-publish.
MS: Of all your books, which is your favorite?
MC: Ooh, that’s a hard one. ‘Crossover’ will definitely hold a special spot in my heart because it was the first of my stories to be published. Having said that, ‘Destiny’, the last book of ‘The Chosen One Trilogy’ is the best in the series (I think). ‘Chael’s Luck’ is my favorite of the young adult stories so far (Here, I’d say ‘Tyler’s Story’, but my publisher isn’t releasing it until December… so I don’t think it qualifies yet. Lol.)
MS: Are you a Mac or are you a PC?
MC: PC. I have never owned a Mac.
Thanks for having me on your blog!

Now, a brief review of Chael’s Luck.
Chael is a young knight in training struggling against not only the competition of training and qualifying as a knight but against being the smallest of them all. Once knighthood is achieved Chael faces a whole new set of challenges, but is he up for them?
What did I think? I enjoyed it. The story was an easy read, very YA friendly, with a twist that I think will intrigue many readers.
